If I'm exporting to DNxHD, does it matter what version I'm on? My guess is that by setting the DNx export to 'RGB/expand', Handbrake is expecting Rec709 legal but you are feeding it Full Range.įinally, rather than Handbrake, I recommend you check out Shutter Encoder.

I think Handbrake handles any color space conversions. This has given me accurate h264's when played back in QT player and after uploading to Vimeo. So I usually export to DNx or APR using the new MOV export option, then transcode in a 3rd party app.įor a long time I have used hyour method #2, but have always kept the DNxHD set to Rec709, then let Handbrake create the h264. It also features an h264 option, but no compression on the audio, so that's often no help. If you're on a current version of MC (2020.x), then I would recommend using the new MOV export option.

That default h264 QT codec is notorious for causing gamma shifts. If you're on pre-2020.x, using the h264 'straight out of MC' is actually using the old QT7 engine.
